New Mexico State Flag Details
Get a New Mexico flag for sale for the front of your house or shop. Our NM flags are crafted to withstand all kinds of outdoor settings due to their weather-resistant material and print. The flag is made from a lightweight, outdoor-tested polyester material, which is tear-resistant for year-round display. One side of the fabric is printed with the flag design and the reverse image is bled through to the other side. This allows the artwork to be visible from both sides without extra printing fees. We print the design using a dye sublimation printing process, which infuses the ink into the fabric so it will not scratch or peel off the flag. Grommet finishing is on the side to set up with the optional hardware. Add either a handheld or wall-mounted pole set to your order. The handheld is for carrying the flag around while the wall-mounted kit stabilizes the flag on a flat surface, such as a front porch. Show how much you love your home state by displaying one of these New Mexican flags.

New Mexico Flag History
Before the current design, an unofficial New Mexico state flag known as the “Twitchell Flag” was used at San Diego World’s Fair of 1915. This included the words “New Mexico”, and an American flag, the number “47”, and the state seal in different corners. It wasn’t until 1920 when the Daughters of the American Revolution chapter in New Mexico decided to get an official state flag. A contest was held in the state in 1923 with a design being selected and becoming the new flag in 1925. It has since remained unchanged. The winning design was done by Dr. Harry Mera and Reba Mera. Dr. Mera was a physician and archaeologist who was familiar with Zia symbols and incorporated them into the artwork. The uniqueness and color of the flag has made it one of the more recognizable U.S. state flags.
New Mexico Flag Meaning
Middle Symbol: This refers to the Zia sun symbol, which was found on some 19th century pottery from Zia Pueblo. This symbol has four points because four is a sacred number in Zia culture. This is because there are four seasons, times of day, and divisions of life. The round middle is the circle of life that binds everything together continuously.
Red and Yellow: The colors used on the New Mexico state flag are the colors associated with Isabel of Castilla, which were introduced by the Spanish Conquistadors.
