History of the Iranian Flag
Many flags have been associated with Iran in the past before the new design was used. These former flags can be traced back to the Bronze Age. During the Achaemenid empire, “a golden eagle” banner was used by the empire’s founder, Cyrus the Great. During this time, the military also had their own Persian flags for different divisions. Flags were used during the different empires over the time with the more recognized lion-and-sun emblem showing up during the Safavid dynasty around the 1500s. The lion and sun symbol continued showing up in different flags used for the country over the decades dating up to 1980 when a new flag was established. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, an Islamic Republic replaced the Pahlavi monarchy, and the lion/sun emblem was replaced with a red Tawhid emblem in the center. The green, white, and red color scheme was used as the country’s flag before the revolution, dating back to the 1930s when the lion and sun were still used. Before the bottom stripe was red, it was pink in the early 1900s. The three colors are traditional and date back to the 1700s.
Iran Flag Meaning
Emblem: The Tawhid emblem replaced the Lion and Sun emblem that used to be in the center of Iran’s flags. The symbol was designed in 1980 and combines Islamic elements. The symbol includes the word “Allah” and the phrase “There is no God Except Allah”. There are also four crescents representing the letters aleph, laam, and heh. There is also a tashdid in the center. The tulip shape comes from the legend that tulips grow from the blood of martyrs, representing those who died for Iran.
Script: At the bottom of the green stripe and on top of the red stripe, there is an Arabic script that says “Allāhu akbar” (“God is great”) 22 times because the revolution occurred on 22 Bahrām. The “Allāhu akbar” saying refers to what is said during Muslim prayer and during battle.
Green: The top green stripe has the traditional green color associated with the Islamic religion.
White: The middle white stripe of the Iranian flag stands for peace and is also a traditional color for Iran.
Red: The final bottom red stripe is another color traditionally used for Iran and stands for courage.
