Ghanian Flag History

After years of being under British rule, Ghana attained independence in 1957. When this happened, a Ghana flag was developed to represent the struggle and final achievement of independence. Because the flag was designed to represent the country’s independence, it makes sense that it would first be flown on their Independence Day. When Ghana formed a union with Guinea in 1959, two stars were included on the flag because Guinea didn’t have a national flag yet. When Mali joined the Union of African States in 1959, a third star was added to the design. When conflict within the union began over the confusion of who was to rule, Ghana went back to the one black star design in 1961. The yellow stripe in the middle of the flag was also temporarily replaced with a white one in 1962. The national flag went back from the previous red, gold, and green stripes due to popular demand. The original 1957 flag was adopted back in 1966 and has remained the Ghana’s flag ever since.

Ghana Flag Meaning and Colors

Red: The top red stripe stood for those who died fighting for the independence of Ghana from the British. It also represents the love the forefathers had for the nation, which caused them to fight.

Yellow: The middle yellow, or gold, stripe symbolizes the mineral wealth of Ghana. Gold is one of the mineral sources to come from the country, causing the country to be called the Gold Coast before gaining the name Ghana.

Green: The bottom green stripe of the Ghana flag colors stands for the forests and natural resources that provide the country with food, oil, and crops. The crop produce in Ghana is still instrumental to the nation.

Black Star: The middle black star is an emblem for the emancipation of the African country from colonialism. The star was previously used for the shipping line the Black Star Line from 1919 to 1922. The national football team of Ghana is also known as the “Black Stars”.
