California State Flag Details
Showcase your love for your home state with a California flag for sale. Display these flags indoors and outdoors due to the durable, outdoor-tested materials. Our flags are designed for year-round use in a variety of weather conditions. This flag of California is made from a knitted flag polyester, which is lightweight and tear-resistant so no matter the weather, your flag will not get ruined. We print the design on one side of the material and the reverse image bleeds through to the other side. We also use a modern dye sublimation technique, which prevents the graphics from scratching and peeling off the fabric. If you need hardware for setting up your flag, add on either a handheld or wall-mounted pole set to your order. Both flagpoles are easily assembled with your flag, due to the grommet finishing on the side. These flags are great additions to both professional buildings and private homes.

CA State Flag History
A star, bear, and red stripe were used on California’s first flag. The star came from Juan Alvarado’s rebel flag, which was incorporated into the first bear flag used by the state. Peter Storm designed the first bear flag to incorporate the star, bear, and stripe, while an alternate version was created by William L. Todd around 1846.
Storm’s version had a red star and the bear standing on its hind legs while Todd’s version had a tan star and the bear on all four legs with the words “California Republic”. Todd’s California flag began being recognized around the state, including by the son of the USS Portsmouth Commander who called the bear “Cuffy”. It was also used a lot during the Civil War in place of the US flag. Todd’s flag, however, was not officially adopted as the state emblem with an updated design until 1911.
Because no specifications were issued, there were many versions of the California state flag created, changing the design of the bear and the size of the bottom red bar. A standardized version, which is the one currently in use today, was established in 1953.
California Flag Colors
Grizzly Bear: The bear on the California republic flag represents strength and resistance. The current design of the bear was derived from a watercolor from 1855.
Lone Star: The star comes from Juan Alvarado’s Red Lone Star Flag that was used for his rebellion after California declared independence from Mexico.
California Republic: The whole state flag of California was meant to symbolize the California Republic, which only lasted for about a month in 1846 when Todd’s flag was first created.
Red Stripe: The bottom red stripe was designed by Todd from flannel given to him by the wife of Captain John Sears. She said the flannel was from a petticoat she wore when crossing the mountains.
