Flag of Iowa History
An Iowa flag was not created until around WWI. The Iowa chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Iowa National Guardsmen requested that a state banner be made. This was because many other states had unique banners to represent them while Iowa didn’t. A member of the DAR, Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, designed the Iowa state flag on the advice of some guardsmen. Her artwork was reminiscent of the French Tricolor, which was used in Iowa before the Louisiana Purchase. After the DAR approved her flag, they sent it to the Iowa State Council for Defense, which allowed the flag to be used by Iowa’s troops. It still, however, was not officially accepted as a state flag. The flag was used by the guard in 1917 and Governor William Lloyd Harding accepted the flag in 1918, but the legislative attempts to make it the official state banner failed the next year. In 1920, the DAR approached legislators again in an effort to make the flag official. It was finally adopted as the state flag of Iowa in 1921, four years after it was first created.
Iowa Flag Meaning
Blue: Recalling the three colors of France’s flag, the blue stripe of the Iowa state flag stands for loyalty.
White: The middle white stripe refers to purity. This is another color inspired by the French tricolor, which was previously used in Iowa.
Red: The final color block was also taken from the flag of France, because Iowa was once a territory of France. It represented courage.
“Iowa” in Red: The state name in red represents the Iowa soldier writing in blood on the white pages of history. He is meant to defend the ideals of the flag and the state motto included.
Bald Eagle: An eagle holding a ribbon is also included on the Iowa state seal. The eagle on the seal was to symbolize the national power of the U.S.
Ribbon: The eagle is carrying a ribbon, which includes the state motto, “Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.” This is another callback to the state seal.
